These four musicians describe themselves as a "post-jazz Indie band." In fact, this South London quartet sounds nothing like contemporary jazz. Instead, their music is entertaining, agile, melodic, but also laid-back and repetitive. Their current album "Isla" was issued on Peter Gabriel's "Realworld" label and jumped straight to number one on the British iTunes jazz charts. The quartet's sound is marked by the "hang," an instrument made from metal, which sounds like a spherical steel drum and was invented in 2000 by two Swiss men.
Duncan Bellamy: drums; Milo Fitzpatrick: contrabass; Nick Mulvey: hang, percussion; Jack Wyllie: soprano and tenor, saxophone/electronics
The Portico Quartet will be featured on the Klangfenster program/7:45 p.m./Swiss Radio DRS 2 on April 6, 2010.
